           The Black Cat is a American short story by Adgar Allan Poe. 



1. What does The Black Cat symbolises?




A black cat naturally symbolises evil and for Poe to say that when he see's a black cat, he feels anger, this gives the reader an ideal that the black cat in Poe's short story, also symbolises evil. Poe uses symbolism to impact the overall tone of the story by using symbolism and imagery throughout his story. A black cat symbolises mystery and secrecy,”



2. List out the word which give thrilling effect while reading the story.



  • Tomorrow I die.
  • Free my soul from the horrible weight.
  • I have been distroyed.
  • I became less loving in my manner.
  • I took a small knife out of my coat and opened it.
  • I forgot how to smile and laugh.

  • I cut out one of its fearful eye.
  • I tied a strong rope around cat's neck.
  • I hung it from one of  the wood beams above my head.
  • I hung it until it was dead.

3. What do you think why does the Black cat keeps following the narrator.?





The narrator and Pluto are very close and their friendship lost for many years until the narrator becomes an alcoholic. The Black cat illustrates best the capacity of the human mind to comment upon its own destruction. Poe uses irony to indicate the cat's newfound insight and detechment from the narrator after seeing his true nature. Once the cat loses loses an eye , for who he really is. The Black cat is the past truma and reality which keep following him . The narrator deceives and manipulates those around him because of an impulsive , egocentric personality knows as psychopathy.



4. "Anything excessive is bad " what is your take on this....?




Everything in life should only be in the correct and adequate quantity. Excess adds stress and anxiety to our lives. Excessive means going beyond a normal limit. Anything that is way too much be it, money, relationship, emotions,ego etc. Only cause problems and issues or bad things.

The story is a short one…about a man in a drunken rage who attempts to kill the second, black cat in his household by swinging an ax at it (he already maimed their first black cat by digging out it’s eye and then hanging it from a tree). The wife intervened in the swinging of the ax. You can imagine what happened next…but do read the story. It’s a morality tale with a lot of symbolism.

The analysis of policy convergence, or: how to chase a black cat in a dark room

Political science research on policy convergence has largely remained inconclusive. While many studies found support for the convergence hypothesis, an almost equally large number of studies rejected it. Convergence thus could be a less general phenomenon than many theorists believe. This article identifies a second possible explanation. The variance approach, which dominates political science research on policy convergence, is likely to lead to wrong inferences. Analysing various artificially generated convergence processes, we find that neither the variance approach nor the coefficient of variation detects convergence when it is conditional or when theoretically unidentified convergence clubs exist. Our analysis suggests that researchers should estimate rather than measure convergence. By estimating convergence researchers may (a) test the causal relationship, (b) account for conditional convergence, (c) control for the existence of convergence clubs, and (d) examine convergence to an equilibrium level of a policy.

There is anecdotal and empirical evidence for black cat bias, the phenomenon where cats (Felis silvestris catus) with black coats are viewed more negatively, adopted less often, and euthanized more often than lighter colored cats. Despite the anecdotal claims, there is scarce empirical evidence for black cat bias. Using evaluations of cat photos, the researchers examined differences in people’s attitudes toward black and non-black cats of various colorations on measures of perceived aggression, perceived friendliness, and willingness to adopt. The researchers also explored whether participants’ levels of religiosity, superstitious beliefs, and prejudicial racial attitudes were related to black cat bias. Finally, the researchers explored whether black cat bias was related to difficulties people had in reading the emotions of black cats compared to non-black cats. This study provided evidence of black cat bias in the sample. People exhibiting higher degrees of black cat bias had higher levels of superstition, but not religiosity or racial prejudice. Additionally, people who had difficulty reading the emotions of black cats tended to exhibit a stronger bias against adopting black cats.

"Amurt Rang"-Youth festival 2022

           This blog is based on my very first experience with this kind of activity. After two years Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University organized a Youth Festival on 18/19/20/21 September 2022, hosted by Takshila Institute. In the third year of my graduation, this is the first kind of activity in which more than 44 colleges of Bhavnagar participate in it. 




            


                  
                    As a part of Kala Pradarshan, Kala Yatra is being organized in the duration of 4:00 to 6:00 pm. In which the main subject of every collage is according to Azadi ka Amurt Mahotsav and all the topics regarding this are taken for presentation... The main motive behind this Kala yatra is to make aware citizen about the activities.
Various themes like Women empowerment, Bhavnagar 1723 to 2022,
Literature the Digital World, Rural tribes, Awareness of accidents, New Education policy, etc. represented thereby different colleges.

                The youth festival is a platform where students can explore and identity themselves. By participating in different activities they grow up. There were no particular college groups for three days it's like all the students are the same and reflecting the unity of students. Three days full of enthusiasm and energy.

                      The opening ceremony was on September 19 . After the opening ceremony, all events started simultanously. In those days main events were organized. Including, Music, Folk Dance, Fine arts, Theatre events, and Literature. In this Youth festival, there were five places where these events were organized.

2. External Department
3. Old Court Hall
4. Amphitheater
5. English Department

                         Mimicry, Bhajan, Tatkal Chitr, Prashn Manch, Sw-Rachit Kavya Pathan, Lok Nruty, Mime, Halvu Kanthy Sangit,Collage.

                    In a way, all activities are somehow connected with the literature and it's given us a new way of thinking. 

             On the first day, I attended mimicry and there was lack of participants almost all mimicry's themes were based on train, horror, nature, and instrument voices. 

             Then I went for Lok Nrutya in which all types of our dances including "Tipnni Ras", "PRACHIN GARBA", "ARVACHIN GARBA", and "RAS" were presented there in specialized attire which reflects our lifestyle and ancient history. 

After that, I attend "Halvu Sangeet" which is based on our falk, folktales, rituals, love, etc.





I also show the Cartoons which were a satire on society with various drawings like political issues, Inflation, Fuel related issues, and accidental issues were taken in it. One of the most reliable and connecting activities I found is because it is too connected with literature, especially with English students.



In poster-making and drawing competitions, I found so much creativity in subjects.

Samuh Geet, Ekanki, Western Song, Lok geet, Clay Modeling, Nibandh, Mono acting, short film, photography, Lok vadhya Vrunda, the Duha hand.

                   On the second day, I attended a Drama event that was based on topics like current scenarios. It tended to enclose the reality of the modern world. Like education, women empowerment, gaming, disadvantages of social media, etc. In the drama event, there was not enough space for the audience and that is why there were difficulties.


In the mime, I only attend one which was based on the reality of circus life and their animals like how man's innate selfishness hurt animals and the reality.
In the event of mime, there was a bit of inconvenience in that place lack of space and instruments students faces a struggle.

                    Then I attended d "Lok vadhy Vrund" event in which there were a lot of combinations of different instruments and through that, they gave a phenomenal effect on the audience. 







I also participated in the event "Nibandh". I wrote an essay on "Health is necessary" and secured the first rank in it. 



On the third day here is a list of competitions:  Sugam Geet, Elocution, Rangoli, Installation, and Debate.







In the installation, the main theme was cleanliness, freedom, and culture. Every installation presents different views of the user object its like didacticism and satire toward society.




In clay modeling, there are different topics like the Bond of teacher & student, Yoga, and traveler Through these topics, they present their creative thought with the help of clay.

                     The next event was our own which was in English Department. Due to some technical issues, this event was not cast on live stream also the other short film was not shown to the audience. This audience doesn't know about this event.


I also participate in a Debate competition in which there were two subjects 
1. Are women free in our society..?
2. India, on way to being "Vishavguru".


We choose the first topic and secured the first rank in this competition too. I got two gold medals and certificates including prize money.




After declaring all the prizes and rankings our college become runners-up in the Youth Festival 2022. I am feeling grateful that I was part of it and that I also contribute to my college. 






I had different experiences throughout this whole journey from the practice to becoming runner-up the talents gave me enthusiastic vibes. For all the students who need a platform for their talent, this is the biggest chance to take it. MKBU provide students with a huge platform so that they explore themselves and become a better version of themeselves.








All these colleges and departments are winners of the youth festival 2022. I want to congratulate everyone who participated in the youth festival.

Painting exhibition



 

Today , on November 18 2022, we  visited contemporary painting exhibition based on the subject of subconscious mind and thoughts at Nilambag Palace Art Gellary. All the paintings was made by Digvijay Singh Rana sir who belong from the limbi, Surendra Nagar. These all painting was made on canvas by oil painting colour and used of blad. He had around 40 to 45 paintings collection on these subject. These paintings is bold in nature but besed on think power.

The exhibition depicts the corncopia of thought and manderning questions, that can be a part of subconscious. The ability to understand subconscious mind can lead to controlling and getting read of various phobias, which may be hindering positivity and productivity in life.











This painting is an interpretation of  the ancient story of Adam and Eve who ate the Apple and the world begins. On the other hand it's also showing the real nature of man and woman and they both made from each other's mind. The multiple personality of mankind and mixture of thoughts presenting in this picture.



This painting is shows awaken  how the real nature of man and woman and the real desire of mankind awake in subconscious mind. We hid our bold thought under the mind and it's come out in some situations.


This painting is showing us that when we see things visually, the we see them as they really are and than interpret them through our mindset. That is why so many eyes for visualising. Bold thought are also one of them.



This painting presenting the hidden desire of human body. The side face and stret face showing the different views in one human being. Person's eye reflects the reality  of subconscious.



This painting is similar to Picasso's method. This painting is based on Rana sir's own method. So many people's thoughts affect one person's subconscious level. In these painting only use of black and white colour showing the positive and negetive things which go on side by side.




This painting is based on Indian Marriage and rituals. Man thinks that these kundli affect subconscious level so much that person thinks that he or she was actually become that. These superstition affect man's subconscious level positive as well as negetive .



This painting presenting the real struggle of man's thoughts. Spritual nature of man's outer mind cause lot of struggle for man himself. The ethics of man and real pleasure are different in nature and split of both things make things more complicated in nature and affect subconscious.



This painting presenting man escaped nature from the situation when it comes to faces it. This shows us that how this bright colours is helping man to go inside the darkness of mind.  The real human watching this struggle with his one eye.



These paintings reflects the spiritual side of human like from savage nature of Id man building new body of ego related ethics and moral values. The struggle is same for the human but positivity reflects in it.



This painting present man innate desire also telling that man and woman are connect with eachother in every manner. The face with one eye open and one eye closed showing both perspective of mankind that they are awake as well as deeply in sleep of their unconscious mind. The one eye showing the subconscious level.


This painting shown the same story of Adam and Eve but with the weapon they made the other zender with the help of subconscious mind. They loose themselves with weapons and trying to be the one soul. This picture also based on thought of mixing of thoughts man and woman. 




This is the person who made all the paintings which is rare in nature. This subject is so unused so elaborating it is one the best thing.



          On this day by showing all this paintings I had a different experience and also find new way which based on psychological aspects.

* Introduction

               This story is like most other stories by Laxman, treats the theme of false prestige, society with simplicity, humour, hypocrisy. The author describe the plight frame-maker,Datta who splashes paint on old and respected gentleman that a customer wished to have framed. The vivid description of the things, situation and characters adds unexpected humour in this story.This story is satire on the society.


* Outline of the story :

             The man comes with the photo of his dead grandfather and explain the painter how important is the picture and person to the family also reminds him to make that best as possible. By mistake paint can falls down. 
            
               Photo was gone and painter put similar photo into the frame. When customer arrive for bringing frame ,he shouted annoyingly for wrong shape and main problem was vanished.


" Our mind is so much conditioned on how we want the things should be and we forgot to see how actually the things are..."



* Summary of the story:


            
                 "The modern frame works" is a shop extra large wooden packing case mounted on wobby legs tucked a gap between a drug store and radio repairing shop.  Datta the owner of the shop who was in concave figure, silver rimmed glasses and a complexion of seasoned timber, fitted into his shop with the harmony of fixture.  There are lot of frame in his shop like....

5. Cheap Monalisa frame
6. National leaders frame
7. Wedding couple frame
8. Urdu calligraphy
9. The snow-clad fujiyama frame
 
              At that time one customer arrive who was tall and rusting looking and he want really good photo frame and coast doesn't matter for best frame. He didn't being stint when a great soul is concerned. He wanted to give homage to his grandfather and with that he described greatness of him.

" If this world had just a few more like him , believe me it would certainly have been different places."
   
                 The photo of old man was looking sepia brown in colour an old man sharp and highly glanzed inspite of it antiquity. The old man was philanthropist, social worker, in top heavy cascading turban. Datta asked him about which sort of frame he want plain, wooden, lacquer,gold, plastic or just enamel painted. Customer don't have sense about choice and he was confused, unsure about his judgement. He was afraid of ensuring his saviour for ever in some ugly cheap frame.
 
              Datta recommend him one with profusion of gold leaves and winding creapers ,German imported frame. Datta asked him for shape and mount . Customer questioned about price and Datta replied frame, mount, glass all will coast seventeen ruppes. Customer pretend to be shocked and trying to bargain then agree upon the price.

               Customer arrive earlier for frame Datta find man's obsessive attachment with photo and fanatic devotion for it. Datta always made frame frame after customer's second arrival because of his past experience. Datta started making frame and as usual finding pencil strub, flase shape that he mistook for pencil harrassed him on end and stocked his anger.
 
               Datta frustratly shook his dhoti, violently and he upset a tin containing white enamel paint and it leaned on the photo. Datta  stood transfixed and started at the desaster as if he had suddenly lost all faculty of movement. Then suddenly he recovered sense he set about rescuing the picture in the desperate hurry that he made aa wrose mess of it. He rubbed the picture and half of old man's face and nearly all turban were gone. He feel helpless sat with both hands clutching his head.

             Datta's imaginations  run wild, suggesting nightmarish consequences of his own dear self. He racked his brain for long while thought about God in his mind. Datta show god after the destroy the photograph. He has opportunity to pray the god but he instead decides upon taking action. In Datta's mind thought coming while watching middle aged man, idea begun to take shape and show the possibility of finding an acceptable substituted. 

              Datta anxiously serch for brownish photograph reject so many photos due to sported flower vase in background and overdressed children. He find one yellowish photo and constrated in work and made a frame, Datta has forgotten about customer's request due to his quest and also become bold enough to chellenge customer also prepare his answer and revise it many times.

" Look, my dear man, I don't know who has been trying to fooling you ! That's the picture you brought here for framing ,take it or throw it away. "


      On next day customer's arrive, Datta loosing his nerve, he would betray the big hox, he had played already gone through thousand time rehearsed it so many times. He started slowly opening frame, after showing the frame childish delight of customer, he fell silent like one who had entered the inner sanctum of a temple. Suddenly this expression vanished from his face and he shouted in tremendous authority...

" Now, don't deny it! I clearly remember asking for cut mount with oval shape. This is square look..! "


             Datta is saved by the foolishness of customer rather than by his own experience . Datta shown himself to be an untrustworthy individual who thinks only himself and has total ignored customer's feelings.

              Laxman tried to shown that Datta has left himself with more work to do with not only replacement photograph but on his character too.




* Themes :



1. Dishonesty :

           Even though the error is readily corrected the fact that Laxman concludes the narrative with the customer complaining is enough to instill upon the readers the value of honesty. Datta have been honest with customer and tell him truth about what happened at least Datta's integrity could not be questioned.


2. Disrensopliblity :

              Datta not taking responsibility of his work cause of afraidation. Rather than taking responsibility Datta decided to lie which place him unfavorable light with the readers who has previously some sympathy for his condition.

3. Hypocrisy :


            The customer agree upon the price through he feel that it be high . After all lavish praise, a bargain over the price would make him still foolish. So his veneration for the old man as well as willingness to pay any price for the frame is both questionable.


4. Deception :


           Datta having destroyed customer's photo and use another to fool the customer then he has being deceptive . This story revele the cunning Nature of Datta and also decepts the customer as a fool.


5. Power of lie :


              Power of lie is overwhelming Datta cause he was afraid of consequences should happen after telling the truth. 
 



Conclusion :


              Thus, through this story Laxman was trying to reflect humorous aspect and also sarcasm and humorous Sentiments of person. There is easy way to lie but some virtues must be followed when it comes to the ethics of man. It is so realistically humorous with satire the process of observing , thinking and the sentimental blindness.

Introduction

Soft skills are a cluster of productive personality traits that characterize one's relationships in a social environment. These skills can include social graces, communication abilities, language skills, personal habits, cognitive or emotional empathy, time management, teamwork and leadership traits. A definition based on review literature explains soft skills as an umbrella term for skills under three key functional elements: people skills, social skills, and personal career attributes.

The importance of soft skills lies in the fact that they are not restricted to a specific field. These thinking dispositions consist of a group of abilities that can be used in every aspect of people's lives, without any need to readapt them based on the situation. Their ductility helps “people to adapt and behave positively so that they can deal effectively with the challenges of their professional and everyday life”.[14] Soft skills make people flexible in a world which keeps changing.

Interest in soft skills has increased over the years. The more research that is conducted, the more people understand the relevance of this concept. The huge amount of fund companies and worldwide organizations are investing in the training and development of this field shows this interest. The European Commission launched the program Agenda for new skills and jobs in 2012 in order to train and explain to young adults this new set of skills. 


1. Listening





Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the communication process.

Listening is key to all effective communication. Without the ability to listen effectively, messages are easily misunderstood. As a result, communication breaks down and the sender of the message can easily become frustrated or irritated.

If there is one communication skill you should aim to master, then listening is it.

Listening is so important that many top employers provide listening skills training for their employees. This is not surprising when you consider that good listening skills can lead to better customer satisfaction, greater productivity with fewer mistakes, and increased sharing of information that in turn can lead to more creative and innovative work.

Many successful leaders and entrepreneurs credit their success to effective listening skills. Richard Branson frequently quotes listening as one of the main factors behind the success of Virgin.


Effective listening is a skill that underpins all positive human relationships.
Spend some time thinking about and developing your listening skills – they are the building blocks of success.



Good listening skills also have benefits in our personal lives, including:

A greater number of friends and social networks, improved self-esteem and confidence, higher grades at school and in academic work, and even better health and general well-being.

Studies have shown that, whereas speaking raises blood pressure, attentive listening can bring it down.

Listening is Not the Same as Hearing
Hearing refers to the sounds that enter your ears. It is a physical process that, provided you do not have any hearing problems, happens automatically.

Listening, however, requires more than that: it requires focus and concentrated effort, both mental and sometimes physical as well. 

Listening means paying attention not only to the story, but how it is told, the use of language and voice, and how the other person uses his or her body. In other words, it means being aware of both verbal and non-verbal messages. Your ability to listen effectively depends on the degree to which you perceive and understand these messages.

Listening is not a passive process. In fact, the listener can, and should, be at least as engaged in the process as the speaker. The phrase ‘active listening’ is used to describe this process of being fully involved.

The Purpose of Listening
There is no doubt that effective listening is an extremely important life skill. Why is listening so important?

Listening serves a number of possible purposes, and the purpose of listening will depend on the situation and the nature of the communication.

To specifically focus on the messages being communicated, avoiding distractions and preconceptions.

To gain a full and accurate understanding into the speakers point of view and ideas.

To critically assess what is being said. (See our page on Critical Thinking for more).

To observe the non-verbal signals accompanying what is being said to enhance understanding.

To show interest, concern and concentration.

To encourage the speaker to communicate fully, openly and honestly.

To develop an selflessness approach, putting the speaker first.

To arrive at a shared and agreed understanding and acceptance of both sides views.

Often our main concern while listening is to formulate ways to respond. This is not a function of listening. We should try to focus fully on what is being said and how it's being said in order to more fully understand the speaker.

Effective listening requires concentration and the use of your other senses - not just hearing the words spoken.

Barriers to Effective Listening
To improve the process of effective listening, it can be helpful to turn the problem on its head and look at barriers to effective listening, or ineffective listening.

For example, one common problem is that instead of listening closely to what someone is saying, we often get distracted after a sentence or two and instead start to think about what we are going to say in reply or think about unrelated things. This means that we do not fully listen to the rest of the speaker’s message.

This problem is attributed, in part, to the difference between average speech rate and average processing rate. Average speech rates are between 125 and 175 words a minute whereas we can process on average between 400 and 800 words a minute. It is a common habit for the listener to use the spare time while listening to daydream or think about other things, rather than focusing on what the speaker is saying.

Of course the clarity of what the speaker is saying can also affect how well we listen. Generally we find it easier to focus if the speaker is fluent in their speech, has a familiar accent, and speaks at an appropriate loudness for the situation. It is more difficult, for example, to focus on somebody who is speaking very fast and very quietly, especially if they are conveying complex information.

We may also get distracted by the speaker’s personal appearance or by what someone else is saying, which sounds more interesting.

These issues not only affect you, but you are likely to show your lack of attention in your body language.

Generally, we find it much harder to control our body language, and you are likely to show your distraction and/or lack of interest by lack of eye contact, or posture. The speaker will detect the problem, and probably stop talking at best. At worse, they may be very offended or upset.


2. Teamwork skill :



Teamwork skills are the skills that enable you to work well with others. Candidates with strong teamwork skills are sought out by employers for many reasons—they demonstrate leadership, collaboration, and good communication.


What Are Teamwork Skills?

Teamwork skills involve your ability to work cooperatively with others.1 Regardless of your role, you need to be able to work well with others and convey your teamwork skills to hiring managers, recruiters, and prospective employers.

Scan any job listing, and you’ll see that even ads that seek “self-starters” also inevitably use the phrase “team player.” Those who have teamwork skills like communication, collaboration, leadership, and a positive attitude can help a team be more productive.

Types of Teamwork Skills

There are a variety of different teamwork skills, but they are all related to your ability to engage and work well with others. Being a successful member of a team requires excellent communication, listening, and conflict management skills.

Below is a list of the most important teamwork skills that employers seek in candidates. 


Communication


Being a good team member means clearly communicating your ideas with the group. You must be able to convey information via phone, email, video, and in person. You want to make sure your tone is always professional but friendly. Both verbal and nonverbal communication are important when working within a group setting.

Conflict Management

An important teamwork skill is being able to mediate problems between team members. You need to be able to negotiate with your team members to settle disputes and make sure everyone is happy with the team’s choices.


Listening

In order for you to engage your EQ, you must be able to use your emotions to make constructive decisions about your behavior. When you become overly stressed, you can lose control of your emotions and the ability to act thoughtfully and appropriately.

Think about a time when stress has overwhelmed you. Was it easy to think clearly or make a rational decision? Probably not. When you become overly stressed, your ability to both think clearly and accurately assess emotions—your own and other people’s—becomes compromised.



Emotions are important pieces of information that tell you about yourself and others, but in the face of stress that takes us out of our comfort zone, we can become overwhelmed and lose control of ourselves. If your primary caretaker as an infant understood and valued your emotions, it’s likely your emotions have become valuable assets in adult life. But, if your emotional experiences as an infant were confusing, threatening or painful, it’s likely you’ve tried to distance yourself from your emotions.

But being able to connect to your emotions—having a moment-to-moment connection with your changing emotional experience—is the key to understanding how emotion influences your thoughts and actions.

Do you experience feelings that flow, encountering one emotion after another as your experiences change from moment to moment?

Are your emotions accompanied by physical sensations that you experience in places like your stomach, throat, or chest?

If any of these experiences are unfamiliar, you may have “turned down” or “turned off” your emotions. Become aware of how effectively you use nonverbal communication. It’s impossible to avoid sending nonverbal messages to others about what you think and feel. The many muscles in the face, especially those around the eyes, nose, mouth and forehead, help you to wordlessly convey your own emotions as well as read other peoples’ emotional intent. The emotional part of your brain is always on—and even if you ignore its messages—others won’t. Recognizing the nonverbal messages that you send to others can play a huge part in improving your relationships.

Use humor and play to relieve stress. Humor, laughter and play are natural antidotes to stress. They lessen your burdens and help you keep things in perspective. Laughter brings your nervous system into balance, reducing stress, calming you down, sharpening your mind and making you more empathic.

Learn to see conflict as an opportunity to grow closer to others. Conflict and disagreements are inevitable in human relationships. Two people can’t possibly have the same needs, opinions, and expectations at all times. However, that needn’t be a bad thing. Resolving conflict in healthy, constructive ways can strengthen trust between people. When conflict isn’t perceived as threatening or punishing, it fosters freedom, creativity, and safety in relationships.

Adaptability skills can be developed in several ways including increasing self-awareness and deliberate practice.
Over the past couple of decades softer leadership skills have been increasingly recognised as one of the key components required to lead successfully. But, our research and experience shows that a lot of leadership failures arise from an inability to adapt and let go of old behaviours.

Whilst it’s important to use our past experiences of change to inform how we might tackle the next unexpected challenge, being adaptable is about remaining open and flexible in our approach, accepting that we may succeed or fail along the way.

In a world that is going to continue to throw new situations for leaders to navigate, the need for adaptability in the workplace — to learn and unlearn — is critical to future success.

What is adaptability?



Adaptability is a soft skill that means being able to rapidly learn new skills and behaviours in response to changing circumstances. Employers usually look for adaptability when hiring new staff and the skill is often included in job descriptions because of its importance for growth within a role.

Someone demonstrating adaptability in the workplace is flexible and has the ability to respond effectively to their working conditions — even if things don’t go as planned They usually work well on their own and with team members.

People in leadership positions are often expected to manage unusual situations without explicit instruction. An adaptable leader must be able to solve problems in a fast-paced environment and trust their judgement when making difficult decisions.



Observe and monitor changes in your environment: 


You will not see the need for a change until you notice changes in your environment. Adaptability must not be easy only but timely as well. Always make a conscious effort to monitor trends, values, attitudes etc. Compare present observations with past ones and find out what has changed.


 For instance:


 Low customer retention rate despite an increased sales figure is an indication that there are disgruntled old customers who need to be attended to.
Be willing to learn: Observation alone is not enough. If the result of your observations suggests you need to learn something new, do not hesitate to do so. While you can learn some things on your own when furnished with appropriate educational resources, others may requiretutorials from specialists. Don’t decline to use the services of a professional tutor if necessary.


Avoid procrastination: 



Don’t just be willing to learn. Take the necessary course of action. Remember that adaptations are more effective when the action is taken earlier. For instance: Your competitors started diversifying after the industry faced a decline and an inevitable collapse. However, you started a new trade after the old industry had collapsed totally. By then, while you are now a novice with a very small customer base, they would have a built a wider network of customers and suppliers in the new industries.




Acknowledge the fact that changes are bound to occur: 


Though it is difficult to let goa norm, you should know it is people who matter, not you. If customers or employees no longer need that product or expertise of yours, accept it and try newer ventures.

The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines assertiveness as:

“Forthright, positive, insistence on the recognition of one's rights”
In other words:

Assertiveness means standing up for your personal rights - expressing thoughts, feelings and beliefs in direct, honest and appropriate ways.

It is important to note also that:

By being assertive we should always respect the thoughts, feelings and beliefs of other people.

Those who behave assertively always respect the thoughts, feelings and beliefs of other people as well as their own.

Assertiveness concerns being able to express feelings, wishes, wants and desires appropriately and is an important personal and interpersonal skill. In all your interactions with other people, whether at home or at work, with employers, customers or colleagues, assertiveness can help you to express yourself in a clear, open and reasonable way, without undermining your own or others’ rights.

Assertiveness enables individuals to act in their own best interests, to stand up for themselves without undue anxiety, to express honest feelings comfortably and to express personal rights without denying the rights of others.

Passive, Aggressive and Assertive
Assertiveness is often seen as the balance point between passive and aggressive behaviour, but it’s probably easier to think of the three as points of a triangle.

Being Assertive
Being assertive involves taking into consideration your own and other people’s rights, wishes, wants, needs and desires.

Assertiveness means encouraging others to be open and honest about their views, wishes and feelings, so that both parties act appropriately.

Assertive behaviour includes:

Some people may struggle to behave assertively for a number of reasons, and find that they behave either aggressively or passively instead.




Being Passive
Responding in a passive or non-assertive way tends to mean compliance with the wishes of others and can undermine individual rights and self-confidence. 

Many people adopt a passive response because they have a strong need to be liked by others. Such people do not regard themselves as equals because they place greater weight on the rights, wishes and feelings of others. Being passive results in failure to communicate thoughts or feelings and results in people doing things they really do not want to do in the hope that they might please others. This also means that they allow others to take responsibility, to lead and make decisions for them.




A classic passive response is offered by those who say 'yes' to requests when they actually want to say 'no'.

For example:

“Do you think you can find the time to wash the car today?” 

A typical passive reply might be:

“Yes, I'll do it after I've done the shopping, made an important telephone call, finished the filing, cleaned the windows and made lunch for the kids!” 

A far more appropriate response would have been:

“No, I can't do it today as I've got lots of other things I need to do.” 

The person responding passively really does not have the time, but their answer does not convey this message. The second response is assertive as the person has considered the implications of the request in the light of the other tasks they have to do.

Assertiveness is equally important at work as at home.

If you become known as a person who cannot say no, you will be loaded up with tasks by your colleagues and managers, and you could even make yourself ill.


When you respond passively, you present yourself in a less positive light or put yourself down in some way. If you constantly belittle yourself in this way, you will come to feel inferior to others. While the underlying causes of passive behaviour are often poor self-confidence and self-esteem, in itself it can further reduce feelings of self-worth, creating a vicious circle.


Being Aggressive
By being aggressive towards someone else, their rights and self-esteem are undermined.

Aggressive behaviour fails to consider the views or feelings of other individuals. Those behaving aggressively will rarely show praise or appreciation of others and an aggressive response tends to put others down. Aggressive responses encourage the other person to respond in a non-assertive way, either aggressively or passively.



There is a wide range of aggressive behaviours, including rushing someone unnecessarily, telling rather than asking, ignoring someone, or not considering another's feelings.

Good interpersonal skills mean you need to be aware of the different ways of communicating and the different response each approach might provoke. The use of either passive or aggressive behaviour in interpersonal relationships can have undesirable consequences for those you are communicating with and it may well hinder positive moves forward.

It can be a frightening or distressing experience to be spoken to aggressively and the receiver can be left wondering what instigated such behaviour or what he or she has done to deserve the aggression.

If thoughts and feelings are not stated clearly, this can lead to individuals manipulating others into meeting their wishes and desires. Manipulation can be seen as a covert form of aggression whilst humour can also be used aggressively.



Different Situations Call for Different Measures
– or do they?
You may find that you respond differently — whether passively, assertively or aggressively — when you are communicating in different situations.

It is important to remember that any interaction is always a two-way process and therefore your reactions may differ, depending upon your relationship with the other person in the communication.

You may for example find it easier to be assertive to your partner than to your boss or vice versa. However, whether it is easy or not, an assertive response is always going to be better for you and for your relationship with the other person.
